In this post we will explore the distinctive characteristics of American, international, and public schools in China, and analyze the underlying philosophical underpinnings of the respective teaching and communication styles adopted. I will also provide an account of the mindsets that are fostered in each educational environment, and the typical outcomes of these mindsets.
American schools are renowned for their emphasis on independent thinking, creativity, and self-expression. The informal communication style employed by teachers promotes open communication between students and teachers. This approach enables students to develop confidence in their own ability to express their ideas and perspectives. As a result, students are equipped with the necessary tools to think critically and creatively, and to approach problems and issues with a broad-minded perspective.
International schools place a premium on cross-cultural understanding, global awareness, and teamwork. The collaborative communication style employed by teachers encourages students to work together and actively engage in group discussions. Such activities foster mutual respect, appreciation for diversity, and effective communication skills among students. Students are exposed to a range of diverse perspectives and experiences, helping them develop a broad-minded perspective and the ability to work effectively with people from different cultural backgrounds.
Public schools in China, on the other hand, are characterized by an emphasis on obedience, discipline, and respect for authority. The formal communication style employed by teachers upholds strict rules and regulations that students must comply with. This approach instills in students a strong sense of discipline, punctuality, and respectfulness. However, this can result in students being less inclined to think independently or question authority figures.
Each educational environment possesses its own unique strengths and limitations, and the communication styles employed play a pivotal role in shaping the mindsets and approaches to learning of its students. By gaining an understanding of the distinctive features of each educational system, students can make informed decisions on which environment and communication style aligns best with their personal learning goals and preferences.
